Wells International School Boys Tennis Team Crowned National Champions at 2023 Thailand School Cup

Our Seahawk varsity boys tennis players were in Minburi from Saturday to Monday, September 2-4, to vie for the title of national champion at the 2023 Thailand School Cup, sponsored by 100Plus and organized by Thai Tennis Magazine at the Game-Set-Match Tennis Center. Twelve of the country’s top boys teams were invited and seeded based on a criteria that included past performance, international (ITF) and national (LTAT) ranking of each team’s individual players. This year’s field included international schools, as well as Thai government schools and Thai private schools, seeded as follows: Seed 1 – Wells International School; Seed 2 – Prasarnmit Demonstration School; Seed 3 – Khon Khaen University Demonstration School; Seed 4 – Panyapiwat Institute Of Management Demonstration School; Seed 5 – Assumption College Sriracha Campus; Seed 6 – Assumption College Thonburi Campus; Seed 7 – Triam Udom Suksa School; Seed 8 – Patumwan Demonstration School; Seed 9 – Ramkhamhaeng University Demonstration School; Seed 10 – St. Gabriel’s College; Seed 11 – Silpakorn University Demonstration School; and Seed 12 – Bangkok Patana School.

In pool play, Wells went undefeated, beating Assumption College Thonburi, St. Gabriel’s College and Ramkhamhaeng University Demonstration School, all by the same score of 3-0. In the semi-final match, Wells was paired against Patumwan Demonstration School who, despite a lower seed, made it out of pool play as the 4th-ranked team. However, Wells boys continued their dominance, with Penn Charusorn winning 2-0 (4-1,4-0) at 1st Singles, Riku Higash winning 2-0 (4-0,4-0) at 2nd Singles, and the pair of Kla Laosakulphan and Patrick Pattanalerthpan winning 2-0 (4-1,4-1) in doubles.

The championship matches were arguably the most challenging. However, true to form, our Seahawks wrapped up an undefeated tournament run, defeating 2nd-ranked Prasarnmit Demonstration School, 3-0. However, though Penn cruised to a 2-0 (4-0,4-0) win and Kla/Patrick also won 2-0 (4-1,4-1) in doubles, Riku did face a stiff challenge in the 2nd Singles match. However, he eventually pulled off the win at 2-0 (5-3,4-2).

After the dust settled, the final Thailand top-four school rankings for boys tennis teams were as follows:

1st Place – Wells International School

2nd Place – Prasarnmit Demonstration School

3rd Place – Assumption College Sriracha Campus

4th Place – Patumwan Demonstration School

With Thai competition completed, our tennis players, boys and girls, will be preparing for higher level international competition at overseas venues throughout the school year.

Congratulations Seahawks!
