The Songkran Assembly started with a brief introduction about the Songkran festival and how and why it is celebrated. The ambience was extremely attractive with the children dressed in bright colorful and floral clothes. Five monks were invited to the campus, and students and staff had the opportunity to make offerings to them. We then had a demonstration on how the water and flower offering ceremony is done. The children were then entertained with traditional Thai dances performed by our teacher’s assistants while our drivers played the ‘klongs’. There was also a special Thai dance performance by our very talented K-3 students each of whom recieved a gift voucher from Super Star Studio for their participation. Songkran is never complete without games, and so to add on to the festive mood, there were traditional Thai games like the ‘Dern kala’ and the ‘sand mound’ game. Our K-3 students enjoyed the ‘coconut walk’ while the little ones made little sand mounds with containers and decorated them with flowers and flags. The highlight of the assembly however, was the water and flower offering by the students to their teacher. We also had a parent representative from each class, who volunteered to accept the offering and give blessings to the children while Ms Noon our thai teacher played the ‘Kim’ a thai musical instrument. After the assembly the children enjoyed beating the strong April heat with water play.
