September 8th was International Literacy Day, a UNESCO designated day to celebrate and promote the importance of literacy in our world. The On Nut Primary School organized a wide variety of activities to raise our students’ awareness of the role literacy plays in our lives. Students from across grades 1 to 5 collaborated in a variety of ways. Grades 1 and 2 worked together to write book reviews after reading a favorite book together, forging new friendships along the way. Classes 3A and 3B engaged in a variety of reading stations outside their classrooms that included pair reading, reading theater, round robin read alouds, reading with a teacher, and independent silent reading. Classes 4A and 4B formed partnerships across the classes and read in pairs a favorite book of their choosing in the library. Grade 5 designed new book covers for their favorite books and played literacy themed games on the playground. All students had the opportunity to buy new books to add to their collections during the two-day Farmfunbook sale held in the school. It was a very productive day for primary school literacy!
