Girls win 34-12 at home; Boys lose 53-37 on the road.
On Nut – After a long hiatus off the court, the Seahawks were back in action with both senior teams taking on the Eagles of American School of Bangkok (ASB).
With the postponement of a previous league game, the Senior Girls last played at St. Andrew’s where they lost 23-12. However, with the sting of that loss festering for almost a month, the Lady Seahawks came back with a vengeance against the hapless Eagles.
Both teams started out slow. Poor shooting resulted in a very low-scoring first quarter, with Wells holding a slim lead, 5-4. However, Wells’ shooters settled down in the second quarter to double up on ASB, 16-8 by halftime.
For the second half, an aggressive defense frustrated the Eagles, limiting them to just 4 points. In contrast, the fast-breaking Seahawks took advantage of easy layups resulting from steals by Wells’ nimble corps of point guards. By the end of the game, the girls in blue cruised to victory by a score of 34-12.
With the leadership role alternating between senior Ping “Kieren” Wu Yeh, junior Nivan Narula, and sophomore Gunita Anandsongvit, scoring was well distributed. Gunita led the way with 13 points, followed by Kieren with 7 points, and Nivan with 6 points.
Across town at Sukhumvit 49, the boys got tangled up in a battle that, for much of the game, seemed much more evenly matched. However, a slow start coupled with foul trouble throughout the game took its toll on the traveling Seahawks.
In the first quarter, nothing seemed to go Wells’ way. ASB capitalized on this by scoring 9 straight points to start off the game. A foul shot and field goal by Yueh Ting “Kevin” Han finally put Wells on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Good productivity from guards Tanapon “Boss” Phuripichet and Kao “Jim” Chin brought Wells back into the game by the end of the second quarter when the Seahawks trailed 18-13.
The Seahawks inched even closer, with Jim’s third 3-pointer capping off a 20-point third quarter effort that brought Wells within striking distance, trailing by just three points, 33-36. However, as Wells center Kundis “Arm” Setthapongkul foul trouble worsened, ASB went on a rampage with 17 points in the fourth quarter over Wells’ paltry 4 points, leading to a final score of 53-37.
Leading the Seahawk scoring was Jim with 15 points followed by Boss with 6 points.
